The XIII TotalEnergies Gran Fondo Alberto Contador was once again a great success. More than 2,000 cyclists travelled to Oliva to enjoy the best cycling alongside their idols Alberto Contador, Pedro Delgado and the Dutch Fem van Empel, current Cyclocross World Champion.
The event took place last Saturday, September 21, and the start was at 8:00 a.m. next to the Oliva Nova Beach & Golf Resort Hotel. At the start the sky was cloudy but the temperature was perfect for cycling. It was not until kilometre 80 that the rain appeared, accompanying the cyclists to the finish line, without diminishing the excitement and camaraderie experienced during the route.
The Alberto Contador Gran Fondo is a 147-kilometre route with more than 2,500 m of accumulated elevation gain through the provinces of Valencia and Alicante. After the official ribbon cutting, Alberto Contador waited for all the participants to leave so he could start up the race and greet them all. Finally, he caught up with fellow Tour de France winner Pedro Delgado, and they crossed the finish line together.
To make the race even more exciting, at kilometre 40 there was a timed section of the climb to the top of Coll de Rates, 6.6 kilometres long at a gradient of 5.5%. The male winner was Gonzalo Ariño, and the female winner was Fem van Empel.
After reaching the finish line, the participants were able to enjoy a final party and received their commemorative medal that will always remind them of their participation in the GRAN FONDO ALBERTO CONTADOR 2024.
The Arrivo cycling team travelled to Oliva to assist the participants who booked through our agency. They were able to enjoy advantages such as picking up their bib numbers at the Arrivo Cycling VIP TENT and preferential departure on the day of the event.
