In this article we present the unknown brother of Sa Calobra and Port del Valldemossa: Port des Canonge. It is considered the brother of these climbs as you have to descend along a narrow and winding road for about 5 km until you reach the port and then climb back up the same road with slopes of up to 19%. These roads are known for their toughness, winding asphalt and incredible sea views that will make it an unforgettable experience.

You descend from the famous MA-10 road, which crosses the Sierra de Tramuntana, at an exit of the section between Esporles and Banyalbufar. After taking the exit, you descend about 5 km along this road until you reach the small town of Port des Canonge, a pretty port with a cove of stones and small fishing boats. It's tempting to stop in the village and enjoy the views, but we recommend not letting your legs get too cold as the climb is going to be tough.

As we mentioned, it's about 5km from the port to the main MA-10 road, although the actual climb is just under 4km as the last kilometre is fairly flat. The average gradient of the actual climb is 7.5% with one kilometre averaging 10%. You can find the segment of this climb at the following link: https://www.strava.com/segments/2560191?hl=es-ES

The most common route taken by locals, after ascending from Port des Canonge, is to continue along the MA-10 towards Valldemossa and climb Coll den Claret, then enjoy a good 'coca de patata' in the pretty village of Valldemossa. Some brave souls, to make the day even better, also descend and ascend to Port de Valldemossa, another tough climb that I talk about in another post.

Both to descend and ascend to Port des Canonge and Port de Valldemossa, we must bear in mind that these are narrow and winding roads with asphalt that could be improved, so we recommend that you be aware of potholes, stones on the road and cars. Although we mention the poor condition of the roads, we assure you that it is worth visiting these ports!
